1 February 2020 – More than 1000 matches at all level took place in January 2020. A very active month for rugby especially for the school division as inter-school district tournament took place in 5 states.
The year starts with an age-group tournament in Kluang, Johor. 32 teams played in 2 different categories, Under 9 and Under 11. The news on the introduction of X-rugby format in the 2021 MSSM could be the reason why the organiser shifts to the format. This tournament could be the start of more X-rugby tournament in the near future as its promises to be more competitive as well as safer to the player.
The first senior tournament of the year was in Merlimau, Melaka. The annually held Poly 10s saw the Universitas of Jakarta won the IPT categories. The rise of team from Indonesia should give the warning for Malaysia that another nation is doing well to catch up with us and other nation in South East Asia. The host, Politeknik Merlimau won the Poly Category while Politeknik Malaysia won the Women.
State teams use the Arau GIR 7s as a platform to prepare for the 2020 SUKMA in Johor later this year. 8 SUKMA teams travelled north to Perlis to took part in the tournament. Current gold medal holder, Kelantan (TMI Warriors) gave the indication that they will be in Johor to retain the gold. The won the competition as they overcame SAINA 15-19 (read SUKMA Kedah) in the final. SSTMI needed to work in extra time in the Under 17 to overcame another Johor school, English College in the final. As for the KV categories, KV Batu Pahat made all their effort to travel north despite all the hiccups worth it as they beat host in the final. SMK Dato’ Ali Haji Hassan Ahmad signals Johor domination as they won the ladies touch category.
Perak became the first state to start their 15s league. Menterian, Young Lions and Briged Utara won their opening match. The league is set to resume in February with all the matches will take place at Perak Rugby Stadium, Ipoh.
24 inter-school district level already took place in January as teams prepare to compete in state level in upcoming months. High School Batu Pahat finally dethrone KV Batu Pahat in the Under 18 MSSD Batu Pahat after 3 years. The tight final match saw HSBP edge KVBP 10 – 5 in the final. 30 teams took part in the MSSD Petaling Perdana U12. It took 4 days for them to crown the champion with SK Taman Sungai Besi Indah beat SK Seksyen 19 5 – 0 in the final. MSSD Gombak is the first district ever to have the Under 18 girls contact category with 3 teams competing in it. Over in Perak, they start their girl program early as MSSD Bagan Datuk have the Under 10 while Hilir Perak has 6 teams competing in the girls Under 12.
