12 January 2020 – The first-ever Marang 7s is set to take place this week as the organiser is hoping to reach multiple objectives from the tournament. 24 teams from all over Malaysia are set to make their way to Terengganu for the 2 days tournament.

The school, SK Simpang Rawai is taking the initiative to introduce the tournament with the hope to prepare the school team for the upcoming MSSD Marang as well as to compete for a much bigger prize on the state level for the Under 12. Mohd Ikram Shafiq bin Rohadi, School Rugby Coordinator/The Tournament Director shared “We used to travel for the tournament to prepare the team but this year, we invite the top team to come and play here. We are glad that we receive full support from our headmaster, Mr Azahar Shah Mamat as well as from Marang District Education Office and Terengganu School Sports Council for the technical department.”

Terengganu won the MSSM Under 12 category on their home soil in 2019 and they are aiming to retain the title for the 2020 edition.

Ikram Shafiq added “We are hoping to attract the community in Marang to understand the game. We want to show them that this game is safe to play as some of the parents are still reluctant to allow their kids to join the game.”

Schools from 6 different states are set to play in Marang as they will travel from Kelantan, Selangor, Putrajaya, Pahang and Negeri Sembilan. Other than SK Simpang Rawai as the host, 11 other schools from Terengganu will take part.

SK Pauh 5 (Kelantan), SK Wawasan (Negeri Sembilan) and SK Putrajaya P8 (1) are some of the team expected to go all the way in the tournament. SK Simpang Rawai will have 2 teams, with the hope to use their home advantage to challenge for the title.
