30 December 2019 – Rugby Development in Johor starts as early as 8 years old where schools and clubs combine and compete in multiple tournaments all around the state.
Both Johor Rugby Union and the State Education Department played their important roles in making sure the young players are able to have enough platform to compete and perform. It is not something weird to see how dominant Johor is at the moment at the age group level.
Johor Under 18 team has retained the crown they won back in 2019 with scintillating display throughout the tournament that took place in Terengganu. They also retain the overall champion title although their Under 12 team fell short losing in the quarter-final to the eventual winner.
Their state sports school, SMK Tun Hussein Onn was untouchable in the 2019 MSSM Under 15 championship. They retained the title they had won back in 2018 as they beat another Johor school, SMK Sri Mersing in the final. It was all about Johor in that tournament with English College secured the third spot.
Johor’s domination in the school/age group club is not a surprise as they have the most numbers of schools that are actively competing nationwide. They have managed to have more than 40 teams to compete in their Johor Rugby Development School program for the Under 11 team in 4 different divisions. Their Under 16 tournament had seen 24 teams competed. The number could be greater but some of the top teams did not take part.
With 2020 SUKMA set to take place in Johor, they will certainly be aiming to get the best team together and win it at their home soil. They are having some outstanding players who already represent Malaysia in the age group stage and they are certainly expected to challenge for Gold.
Johor has done an outstanding job in the development and it will be important for them to sustain and continue the program for the future of rugby in Johor as well as in Malaysia.
Well done Johor!
