11 December 2019 – Malaysia 15s team will be competing in the Asia Rugby Championship Premier in 2020. It will be the third straight year for Malaysia in that top tier competition, having made the debut in 2018 after winning the 2017 Division 1.

The recent 2020 calendar released by Malaysia Rugby Union confirmed the rumours. Malaysia is set to travel to South Korea for the opening fixture on 16th May 2020. Malaysia last match will be on match week 5 as they will host Hong Kong on 20th June in Kuala Lumpur.

For the record, Malaysia finished 3rd in the last 2 edition. The team are still looking for their first win in Premier, as they came closed to do so in the match against Hong Kong last term.

Malaysia earn the chance to play in Premier after Japan opted not to compete in 2020. The decision came after their outstanding performance in the 2019 Rugby World Cup where they advanced to quarter-final before they went out after the defeat to eventual champion, South Africa.

There were no news on why the play-off fixture between Malaysia and 2019 Division 1 winner, Philippines will not take place as expected.
