Terengganu, Johor share MSSM overall glory

8 August 2019 – Tournament host, Terengganu and Johor have to share the overall MSSM rugby champion title at the end of the 6 days tournament. Both state tied with 42 points as each team win a cup and a plate.

Earlier in the morning, Terengganu lifted the Under 12 title. The journey to the glory did not come easy for them as they lost the opening game on Saturday, to the team the beat in the final, Perak. Terengganu went down 10 – 22 in that match but they managed to secured a spot in the quarter final as they trashed Putrajaya 89 – 0 on the second day. They did not look back, produced one of their best game to beat Johor 26 – 17 in the quarter final and secured the final spot with a convincing 41 – 34 over Sabah.

Terengganu Under 12 was certainly in control in the final. They scored 4 tries as they beat Perak 22 – 5 to secure the title in the match that took place at SM Teknik Terengganu. Terengganu U12 also secured 2 more individual titles as their winger Md. Arif Danial Zulkipeli received the Final Match Best Player award while Rafiq Hasyimi who plays as the scrumhalf receive the Overall Best Player for under 12 award.

Their older brother, Terengganu Under 18 make sure they finished the tournament on high. They secured the Plate title as they beat Melaka 12 – 7 in a very tight match.

The 2018 champion, Johor retains their glory in the Under 18 category. Johor produced an outstanding comeback in the final as two early tries give Negeri Sembilan a comfortable 12 – 0 lead. Johor managed to reduce the gap before the end of the first half. The second half of the match saw Johor took charge and control the game. They utilised the speed in the backline which cause trouble and error for Negeri as Johor added 4 more tries in the last 30 minutes of the match. Johor lifted the title for the second time in a row as they beat Negeri Sembilan 32 – 15 at the final whistle.

Johor also brought home 3 individual award as Mohd Nur Imran wins the Best Backline, Danny Iskandar as the Best Player in Final with Asrin Azman received the Best Overall Player award. Negeri Sembilan can be proud with their prop as Nuraiman Aliff receive the award as the Best Forward.

In the morning session, Johor Under 12 secured 12 points in overall championship as they win the Plate. The team from South overpowered Kedah with a comfortable 50 – 15 in the final.

Terengganu and Johor share the Overall MSSM winner with 42 points, while Perak in third with 41 points (2nd Place in U12, 3rd Place in U18).
