Lions to benefit from research

8 February 2019 – Universiti Teknologi MARA Rugby team, better known as the UiTM Lions is set to make their 7th appearance in the Malaysia Rugby League. The league will start on 17th February until 24 March 2019.

According to UiTM Student Affairs Deputy Vice-Chancellor, YBhg. Prof. Dato ‘Dr AbdullahMohammad Said, for the 2019 season we are aiming to play in the final stage. Although 70% of the player is set to make the first appearance in the tournament, the team’s management is confident that UiTM’s rugby team will achieve this goal.

Eight teams will compete in this tournament this season and UiTM Lions is in Group A with defending champion Keris Conlay, UPM Angels and SSTMI Tsunami. The team which consist of UiTM students started their centralised training as the preparation since January 17.

For 2019, the Lions is being boosted by the support from multiple companies such as Hyba Quest and SkyWorld Development Sdn Bhd. Fitech PLT will also sponsor UiTM’s rugby jerseys for the purpose of establishing a research collaboration to produce rugby jersey fabrics. According to Head coach, Zamri Abd Kahar, the jersey will be used to help players feel more comfortable and fit according to the physical condition of players and the weather in our country. This, in turn, helps local companies to be able to produce more quality sportswear fabrics that are of equal quality to sports brands from overseas.

The UiTM Lions rugby team will also be reinforced by the presence of four import players from Fiji who have started training with the team on Tuesday. National 15s team captain, Mohd Syahir Asyraf Rosli will also make his first appearance for the UiTM Lions team this season.

For the record, the UiTM Lions rugby team managed to play at the end of the 2013 season with Keris Conlay.
