21 January 2019 – SP Setia Badminton Academy field was rocked by young ruggers who took the chance to show their skill in the Rangers 7s Rugby Tournament. The two days tournament offered 3 titles as the team compete in 3 different categories.
The first day saw the Boys Under 10 and Girls Under 12 categories took place. SK Lavender from Negeri Sembilan took home the championship title as they overcame SK Kampung Bahagia 12 – 0 in the final match. Lavender showed outstanding performance, scoring more than 100 points without conceding any points to the opponent.
In the Girls Under 12 category, Kota Bharu Rugby Academy (KOBRA) took home the championship title to Kelantan. A single try in the final was enough to settle the battle as they overcame SK Wawasan Monsters 1 – 0. The girls tournament was played in the Fit Touch.
SK Lavender certainly had a tournament to remember. The senior Under 12 team maintains the momentum in the second day. A hard fought, full of drama final saw Lavender Under 12 beat Kulai Spartans from Johor 15 – 10 in the final.
Mr Raimi Yusuf, the President of Selangor Rugby who is also the previous Malaysia 15s team manager, spent his evening at the field to meet the players as well as presenting the trophy and medals to the winner. On the second day, Mr Noor Azli Bin Ab Rahman, Selangor Education Department assistant director (sports) gave away the prizes.
The tournament attracted 50 schools and 3 clubs to take part as they made the 72 competing teams over the two days. 864 students played the game which attracted more than 3000 parents, teachers and rugby fans who made their way to the SP Setia Badminton Academy field.
