16 to fight for Manila spot

9 January 2019 – 10 players who won the first ever Gold for rugby in the 2017 SEA Games remained in the 2019 SEA Games squad. They are part of 16 players listed by the head coach, Saizul Hafifi as they wish to retain the title by the end of this November.

27 years old, Zulkiflee Azmi will continue to lead and captain the squad. The youngest player in the squad will be Muhammad Azwan Zuwairi who had an amazing 2017 and 2018 campaign.

Anwarul Hafiz who won the silver in the 2015 SEA Games is also back with the squad after he missed out the 2017 Games.

Top scorer in the 2018 1st Asia Rugby Series, Amalul Hazim Nasarrudin make it to the list. 3 other players who played for Malaysia University team including the team captain, Mohammad Sofian Kamil are also with the squad.

Although the average age for the squad is 25, this is a very well experienced squad with 2018 participation in the Asia Games (5th place), Commonwealth Games (13th place) as well as World University Games (7th place)

The team manager of the 2019 Malaysia 7s squad is Prof Madya Dr. Ahmad Naim bin Ismail.

Malaysia overcame Singapore 22 – 7 in the Gold medal match right in front of full capacity crowd at the MBPJ Stadium on 20th August 2017.
