Double delight for Knight

6 August 2018 – Fresh from winning their first title in Kuching a week ago, SMK Tunku Ismail Under 13 team continue their outstanding performance to win their second title last weekend. HSBP 10s saw the Knight rise and conquered the HSBP Green and mark their arrival as the team to beat in the national rugby scene.

STI Knight scored a staggering 23 tries in the group match, the most number of tries during the group stage. They didn’t let a single point for their opponent in all 4 group matches, including the 27 – 0 win over SM Sains Kota Tinggi in the second cup quarter-final match.

The semi-final match between the STI Knight and Tun Hussein Onn Rugby (THOR) of Johor Sports School produced one of the matches to remember especially for the Knight. They recorded the first ever win over THOR after numbers of matches between the two team. The first half tries by Mohd Fakhrul Azam bin Mohd Azmi and conversion from Muhammad Aminuddin bin Shahar gave Knight 7 – 0 lead until the end of the first half. Both teams played their heart out with THOR finally have their own try late in the game. The unsuccessful conversion gave the Knight spot in the final match with 7 – 5 win.

HSBP 10s – Under 13

SMK Sri Mersing booked the second spot in the final. They produced the comeback to score the winning try late in the second semi-final match as they broke the host heart, Batu Pahat High School (HSBP) with 12 – 10 win. Sri Mersing had a wonderful group stage with the 100% win record. They started the second day with a comfortable 19 – 5 win over SMA Arabiah Kluang.

It was also good to see the team such as newcomer, SMA Arabiah Kluang, showed wonderful performance to end the tournament as the Plate champion. That came after they came from behind to overcome SBPI Gombak 12-10 in the final match.

HSBP hope to secure the third spot did not materialize. They lost the 3rd/4th place match to Tun Hussein Onn Rugby (THOR). The effect from giving their everything in the semi-final match saw HSBP unable to compete with THOR who went on to finish third with 19 – 0 win.

The final match saw STI Knight and Sri Mersing unable to replicate their outstanding semi-final performance. Both teams look jaded which lead to the simple mistake. A single try in the first half proved to be the difference between the two teams. Daniel Zafran bin Mohd Ikhwanuddin’s try in the first half gave the title to STI Knight with the 5 – 0 scoreline.

STI Knight brought home RM1000, the championship trophy and medals. They also won the best player title, awarded to the outstanding Muhammad Aminuddin bin Shahar.

Knight head coach, Ahmad Taufiq Abdul Rahani is clearly delighted his team wins the second title in succession. “I am out of words. I broke into tears of joy. It’s hard to explain this wonderful feeling. Thanks to the Almighty for this win”
