Selangor shine in Singapore

1 July 2018 – Selangor Women Under 21 team finished fourth in the 2018 Singapore Rugby Union Club 7s earlier this evening. The team choose Singapore as they continue to prepare for the upcoming 2018 SUKMA in Perak.

The young Selangor team had a good first day where they managed to finish second in the Pool F. The team won two out of three matches as they won the opening game 19 – 5 against National University of Singapore. Blacks Lighting Rugby Club proved to be too strong for them as they lost 36 – 0 in the second match. Selangor finally secured the second spot after an outstanding 40 – 0 hammering over Nanyang Technological University in the last match.

Selangor dream to advance to the final was stopped by another Blacks Rugby team in the semi-final. They lost 26 – 0 to the Blacks Thunder. Bedok Skyllas was a level above Selangor as they dominated the 3rd/4th place match and beat Selangor 34 – 0.

Selangor is the second women team who travel to Singapore after Sabah had numbers of a friendly match last month. Selangor is certainly determined to prepare the team and go for a medal in the SUKMA in Ipoh. They need to step up after their run in the previous NAZA National 7s in Ipoh was stop by the eventual winner, Sabah in the semi-final.

The team head coach, Tan Tian Jian shared, “We choose Singapore as there are not many tournaments for women in Malaysia at the moment. We are lucky that Singapore RU is organising this game. We want to gain as many experiences as possible.”

Selangor will continue their preparation on the home soil as they are organising a tournament for women this July 2018.
