Rugby remains ‘B’
23 June 2018 – Rugby remains in category B sport to Asia Games in Indonesia this August 2018. Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) rejected Malaysia Rugby Union (MRU) final appeal to put the sport in the group A.
OCM Chairman of the Appeal Committee, Datuk Seri Abdul Azim Mohamad Zabidi announced that rugby will remain in category B alongside football, women badminton, handball, kabbadi, paragliding, and silat.
Malaysia 7s team ranked 6th in Asia in the 2017 Asia Rugby Sevens Series despite the outstanding performance to win the first ever gold at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games. That put the team outside the criteria required by the OCM, Asia top 4 in order to be listed in the category A.
Malaysia Rugby Union will have to pay for all the team expenses in Asia Games. They, however, still have the chance to claim everything if they able to win any medals in the tournament.
The team is preparing well under the guidance of Mr. Saizul Hafifi and is expected to take part in 2 local tournaments as well as one international tournament in Japan later next month.
