14 March 2018 – Malaysia 7s men team who won gold in the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games created another history last night. They became the first national rugby team shortlisted for the National Sports Award 2017.

Malaysia 7s team was one of the four candidates for the Best Male Team 2017. Their great achievement during the SEA Games as they bag the first-ever gold for rugby put the team on the same group with national cycling team, national hockey team and the award winner, Malaysia Lawn Bowl team. Although Malaysia 7s team did not win the award, it was good to see rugby starts to get recognition.

The Malaysia Rugby Union president, Dato’ Shahrul Zaman Yahya was present for the ceremony. The team head coach, Mr Saizul Hafifi also attended the ceremony.

Malaysia 7s team will be hoping to continue their good achievement in 2018. They will compete in the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast as well as in the Asia Games in Indonesia later this year.
