Twice for Terengganu
12 March 2018 – Terengganu continues their excellent form to win the Women Open category at the Naza National 7s Series. That is the second straight title in a week time after they secured the same category during the 1st series which took place at Hang Tuah Stadium, Melaka.
Terengganu overcame the same opponent, Kedah in the final match. It was all about Terengganu since the group matches on matchday one. They did not have much problem to top Pool D with wins over Selangor and ATM. To make it better they did not let the opponents a single point on both matches. Terengganu comfortably overcame Selangor 41 – 0 in the first match before they put 4 tries pass ATM to win the second match 24 – 0.
Kedah also had an impressive first day. They open the campaign with a commanding 37 – 0 over Perak. The confirmed the top spot as they beat the host, Johor in the second group match, 24 – 5.
Johor unable to provide many problems to the champion despite their best effort. Johor went down 5 – to Terengganu in the semi-final. In the other semi-final, Kedah got better of Selangor who fields in 8 new players for the second series. Kedah won the match 26 – 12.
The series host, Johor made sure they ended the tournament with the smile as they secured the third spot. They played magnificently to beat Selangor 10 – 5 after the extra time. Both teams drew 5 each at the end of regulation time. ATM was 5th as they overcame Perak 20 – 0.
Terengganu early pressure paid the dividend as they took an early lead in the second minute. The turnover in Kedah 22 area saw 37 years old Aki Loh Nong Sim scored the first try in the final. Kedah took full advantage as Terengganu played with 6 players after Nurul Azreen yellow carded due to a high tackle. Vianny S. Amora scored Kedah try after a great run from their own half before Normasyirah Zahari added two more points. Kedah leads the game at the end of the first half.
Both teams started the second half brightly and it was Terengganu who benefits from it. Abbygale Rayone Micheeal took full advantage to score Terengganu second try in the final. Terengganu secured the title with their third try as Nurul Azreen Azli punished Kedah with a good run from the centre of the field.
Terengganu took home RM1200, medals and trophy as the champion. Mona Tiara Izaniah of Terengganu also won the Women Open best player title.
They will head to the last Series which will take place in Ipoh in two weeks time.
