Mersing marching on
26 February 2018 – Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Mersing became the 5th school to lift the N J Ryan Cup. The school from Johor stop the hot favorite, Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) from having the hat-trick of the championship in a very tight final match.
After an impressive first day, SMK Seri Mersing continues their outstanding run with an impressive 26 – 7 win over SBPI Gombak in the quarter-final. Mersing demolished the host dream to advance to the final as they outclass Koleq with another outstanding 19 – 5 scoreline.
4 times champion, SSTMI made their way to the final with ease. They overcame SM Sains Sultan Mahmud 26 – 0 in the quarter-final. The surprise package of the competition, SM Sains Pokok Sena unable to stop SSTMI. The Tsunami put them to the sword with 3 tries.
It was too close to call between the two top team in the final. For the record, both teams met in the final of NS Royal last year with Mersing came out victorious. That certainly gave a good amount of confidence to Mersing who had a much better start to the game. Mersing took the lead through the player of the tournament, Muhammad Faiq Aslah try. He made it 7 – 0 as he converted the conversion himself.
SSTMI did not back out and took their chances as Mersing played with 6 players after Hazim Nor Ismail yellow carded. They scored their first try through Amirul Aidil Mohd Saleh. The scored remained 5 – 7 after they unable to complete the conversion.
A good link-up play between Hazim Nor Ismail and Faiq Aslah saw Faiq scored Mersing second try of the final match. Faiq made it 14 – 5 with another successful conversion. SSTMI kept on working and managed to score another try via Nur Faisol Arshad. Ammar Mohammad Zamri closed the gap to two with his conversion but it was a little too late for SSTMI.
SMK Seri Mersing beat SS Tunku Mahkota Ismail 14 – 12 to lift the N J Ryan Cup.
To make it sweeter for Mersing, their star player, Muhammad Faiq Aslah was awarded the player of the tournament title. He was impressive since day one.
Faiq contributed 71 points for SM Seri Mersing. He scored 9 tries as well as converted 13 conversions in 6 matches.
