Malaysia Girl ended tournament with a bang

30 November 2017 – Malaysia showed great improvement on the day two of the Asia Rugby Under 17 Girls in the Pre-Youth Olympic Qualifiers in Dubai. The girl made up for the first day lost with a much better performance especially in the last two match against the host, the United Arab Emirates, and the Philippines.

Things, however, did not go as the plan at first. Malaysia girl scored the first try through Bertanila Jubir on the second day as they took on Laos. They did not manage to build on that as Laos produced comeback with 2 tries in each half. Laos beat Malaysia 10 – 5.

Malaysia finally won their first match of the tournament in their 4th games. They got better of the tournament host, the United Arab Emirates with 22 – 0. Malaysia captain, Shania Baduk break the deadlock as she scored the first try in the 2nd minute. Siska Sonny who had an outstanding match added two more tries in each half before Heley Halim sealed the match for Malaysia in the last play of the match.

Malaysia had an outstanding last match against the Philippines. They played and showed their true potential as they trashed their last opponent 41 – 0. Shania Baduk contributed 11 points as she scored a try as well as completing 3 conversions in the last match. Siska Sonny played magnificently to scored two tries. Bertanila Jubir also had her third try in the tournament while Diana Muhamad Jaafar, Feladeefia Jestin and Heley Halim scored a try each as Malaysia dominated their last match.

Malaysia finished 10th out of 12 competing teams. It can be considered as good performance all around with the majority of the players are only 16 years old and they only had 2 months of proper training prior to the game.

Top-seeded Japan met the expectation as they overcame China in the final. Japan produced a comeback from a try down to beat China 17 – 7. Japan girls will join their boys as they will compete in the Pre-Youth Olympic in Buenos Aires, Argentina next year.
