25 October 2017 – 2017 mark COBRA 50th Anniversary which also highlights COBRA first introduction of rugby 10s format. That format now has become internationally popular worldwide. As part of that, COBRA will continue to popularize the format as they will be hosting the 47th COBRA 10s this coming November.
The Combined Old Boys Rugby Association (COBRA) was founded on the 8th June 1967. They changed the name to COBRA Rugby Club under the Malaysian Sports Commissioner purview in 2012. COBRA is the Home of Rugby 10s and the COBRA Invitational Rugby 10s went international 25 years ago, back in 1992.
As for this year, there will be 3 supporting rugby event starting this week.
- COBRA 10s MINI for juniors – 28th November 2017 – RRI Complex Sungai Buloh
- COBRA 10s Ladies for Women – 4 and 5th November 2017 – MBPJ Stadium
- COBRA Legends vs Rest of the World Legends – 8th November 2017.
Speaking during the press conference at Best Western Hotel Rooftop, Lt Col (Rtd) Tommy Pereira, president of COBRA said “We are ecstatic that COBRA has turned 50 this year and we would like to invite everyone to join us at the significant milestone in COBRA’s history.”
The main event, the 47th COBRA 10s will be held from 11th to 12th November 2017. 16 teams have confirmed participation and we can expect firework by looking at the list. 6 strong local club including the host, COBRA as well as ERC Borneo Eagles could be the front-runner for the title. The later overcame the host 19 – 0 during the 2016 edition to lift the trophy and we could expect both of them to give their all in other to lift the title this year.
2017 edition will also see some familiar faces as DUKA Old Boys (South Africa), Charis Wolf Pack (Australia) and NNK Northlink (South Africa) come back to Malaysia after last year edition. DUKA lost in the last year Bowl Final while Charis adventure was stopped by KSDBKL in the plate semi-final. NNK Northlink will be hoping to have a better luck in 2017 as their journey ended in the cup semi-final, narrowly beaten by the host, COBRA 5 – 7.
This year edition will be held at the newly renovated MBPJ Stadium, Kelana Jaya.

Carlsberg Malaysia Berhad also continues their 20 years co-operation as they inject RM 155 000 to be the main sponsor for this year edition.
Tan Sri Krishnan Tan also unveiled the brand new logo for the COBRA 50th Anniversary celebration.
