Victorious Victoria secured unlikely final match

5 May 2017 – Victoria Institution produced the upset of the tournament when they beat Sekolah Alam Shah in the semi final of Malaysia Airports Chairman’s Challenge Trophy. The match which took place at the Padang Ragbi Alamanda, Putrajaya saw Victoria proved doubters wrong when they produced an outstanding performance especially in the first half. Used to be called as Derby of Klang Valley when Alam Shah was in Cheras, both team gave their best in this semi final match.

Sekolah Alam Shah was a big favourite leading to this match as they produced a solid display through out the Super Six League. They only lost once to Malay Collage Kuala Kangsar to finish second behind Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman with only points differences separated the top two teams. Victoria Institution on the other hand won the Perdana League which gave them this chance to compete with the top 3 of Super Six.

Victoria showed that they had a better preparation for the match. They were hungrier compare to SAS as they took a comfortable 15 – 7 in the first half. Victoria took full advantage and punished SAS players mistake to score 3 tries in the first half.

Victoria extended their lead early in the second half with another try and the first complete conversion to make it 22 – 7 before they have to stop the match for almost an hour due to heavy rain. That gave Alam Shah to regroup and dominated the game after the match resumed. However, it was a little to late for them as the match ended with 27 – 19 for Victoria.

Victoria Institution will have to wait as the second semi final between Malay Collage Kuala Kangsar and Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman will take place this Saturday. STAR narrowly beat MCKK 11 – 10 en route to win the league and no one could predict who will win the second semi final.

Victoria have the chance to be the latest school to win the Chairman’s Challenge Trophy after they produce a new format for this year edition. 4 teams compete in 2017 compare to only top 2 Super Six teams compete in the previous 3 editions. Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman won the tittle twice, 2013 and 2016 while MCKK won the second edition back in 2014. There was no tournament in 2015.

The final match of the 2017 Malaysia Airports Chairman’s Challenge Trophy will be held in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Gombak on 13th May 2017.
