Rimau roar in Langkawi 7’s

29 April 2017 – Malaysia national 7’s team which is known as Rimau 7’s at the Langkawi International Rugby 7’s had the perfect start in the first day. The team who is preparing for the upcoming SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, won all the three group matches. They finished top with maximum points as well as with the impressive score.

Rimau started the day in Langkawi with a bang as they crushed Iskandar Raiders 46 – 0. They kept their momentum high in the second match. Rimau made it clear that they are on a mission when they beat Junior Silver Gaurus 34 – 5.

Rimau 7’s made sure they finish top of group C and kept their 100% group matches record as they overcame Majlis Sukan Negeri Kedah 49 – 5 in the last match.

In the quarter final, Rimau 7’s will face Wipers Alamanda Rugby who finished second in the group D. Wipers beat Perlis Borders Boys and UPNM Smookies before suffered defeat 50 – 0 in the hand of last year champion, SAHOCA RC who won all the 3 group matches as well.

The other two teams who kept their 100% winning percentage in the group matches were last year runner-up, Mersing Eagles and SSTMI Tsunami. Both teams are from Johor. Eagles will take on Panthers Blowpipes while SSTMI will face Senior Silver Gaurus in the cup quarter final. The other semi final match will see SAHOCA takes on Iskandar Raiders.

Panthers Blowpipes recorded the biggest win in the tournament so far as they strolled to 67 – 0 win over the home team, Langkawi Rebels in their last group match.

Rimau 7’s is certainly on course to at least make it into the semi final but it will be great to see the team win the championship after their recent disappointment in Singapore as they were well beaten in the South East Asia 7’s final to the host nation.

The knock out round will resume tomorrow morning at 10.00 with the matches from Bowl category. The 16 teams tournament take place at the Langkawi Sports Complex, Langkawi Island, Kedah.
