Champion crashed out of MRL


11 March 2017 – 2016 Champion, Serdang Angels crashed out of 2017 AirAsia Malaysia Rugby League as they were beaten by last year runner-up, Keris Conlay in the quarter final. Both team met in 2016 final where Angels shocked Malaysia rugby scene as they beat top seeded, Conlay to lift the championship trophy.

Serdang Angels who was playing away from home for the first time this season, unable to break Keris Conlay well discipline team. Ahmad Syazwan bin Shuid finished a well move from Keris Conlay to score the match first try as early as in the first 5 minutes. Flyhalf, Mohd Fairuz Abdul Rahman added another 2 more points for Conlay as he cooly completed the conversions.

Mohd Fairuz Abdul Rahman added 3 points 3 minutes later with the tournament first ever drop goals for Conlay to comfortably lead 10 – 0 in the first 10 minutes of the match. Mohamad Syarif Saiful Aazwan bin Sudin grabbed Angels first 3 points through a penalty. With every points count, Mohd Fairuz Abdul Rahman completed another penalty for 3 more points. Angles doubled their work and intensity in the match and that paid off when Syarif Saiful Aazwan bin Sudin grabbed Angels first try. He himself completed the conversion to close the gap of the match to 10 – 13.

The match was stopped due to heavy rain and lightning in the 29th minutes for half and hour.

Angels restart the match with the same intensity before it was stop and managed to take the lead for the first time. Mohamad Ikhwan Akmal bin Zulkipli grabbed his first match try to give Angels 15 – 13 lead.

Keris Conlay import, Etonia Vaqa Saukuru scored a try as Conlay retake the lead 3 minutes later. Mohd Fairuz Abdul Rahman continue his fine form as he added 2 more points with a cooly slotted conversion. Keris Conlay lead in the first half 20 – 15.

Serdang Angels certainly missing numbers of their key player who was away on international duty with Malaysia 7’s team. With rain kept on pouring, the pitch was full of mud, make it hard for both team to play their best rugby.

The score remained the same as both team unable to add any try or penalty to the score line. Keris Conlay got the revenged that they wanted and through to the semi final match. Keris Conlay will play UiTM Lions, the team they already comfortably beat earlier in the group match. The match is schedule to take place on 25th March 2017.
