Serdang Angels suffered third defeat.
3 February 2017 – Serdang Angels hope to retain the championship is under treat after they suffered their third defeat in the last group match. Angels only have themselves to blame after poor first half display cost them the match against Mersing Eagles.
Angels were not able to cope with Eagles quick and powerful in the first half. Eagles strolled pass Angels where they scored three tries and complete all the three conversions. Their tries came from John Vucukula in the 18th minutes before Prop, Farid Sujari added Eagles second 5 minutes later. Apolosi Tuiluma Tanoa scored the third in the 27th minutes. All the three conversions were scored by Wan Mohammad Asyraf to make it 21 – 0 in under 30 minutes.
Serdang Angels showed a glimpsed of things to come in the second half when their Hooker, Mohd Norazman score their first try in the very last minute of the half to reduce the gap to 21 – 5.
Mersing Eagles started second half brightly and needed only 3 minutes to score their fourth try in the match. Wan Mohammad Asyraf completed his fourth conversions. Serdang Angels started their fightback in the 50th minutes. They shifted their games and keep the discipline as their Number 8, Mohamad Ikhwan Akmal scored their second try. They added 2 more after that plus 6 more additional points through Muhammad Faiz 3 complete conversions.
Semi Nakaira conversions and Wan Mohammad Asyraf fifth conversions provided 30 minutes in the second half provided breathing space for Mersing Eagles. Mohamad Aliff Al-Hafiz try and Mohammad Faiz fourth conversions came a little to late as Serdang Angels unable to break Mersing in the last 5 minutes of the match.
Mersing Eagles beat last year champion, Serdang Angels 35 – 33.
Angels hope of qualifying to the quarter final is also under treat. They are now fourth with COBRA who are in fifth place can overtake them if they able to beat Politeknik Malaysia in their last match tomorrow morning.
