196 teams! 3,000 players! 5 countries! 8,000 spectators!

Petaling Jaya, 24 January 2017 – KL Saracens is proud to announce its annual junior rugby tournament, ‘KL Saracens International Rugby 10s 2017’, happening between 18 and 19 February at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Resort. With participants from Brunei, Hong Kong, Macao, Malaysia and Singapore, the tournament is set to be one of, if not the biggest junior rugby tournaments in Southeast Asia.

Running for the 10th consecutive year, the tournament this year will see 195 teams, with more than 3,000 players participating. Divided into 11 age groups, the players will be playing in age groups ranging from Under-6 to Under-18.

According to Azman Sulaiman, Deputy President of KL Saracens, approximately 8,000 people are expected to attend and support the tournament. It is an avenue for all players, coaches, parents and supporters to exhibit the great sportsmanship and camaraderie that had grown since it started in 2008.

“We have more than 500 rugby games to be played on 10 pitches all in one polo field. There will be food and drinks – from satay and nasi lemak to burgers and kebabs. It’s going to be a fantastic weekend of rugby!” he further added.
Dave Goulding, former Deputy President and Head of the Organizing Committee for this tournament, adds that the players have been training really hard for this tournament. “Tournaments such as this one are exactly what makes rugby such a special sport. Seeing thousands of people gathering to watch and play the game never fails to amaze me. It’s a great opportunity for players to impress in front of an international audience, and make some new friends at the same time,” said Goulding.

The ‘KL Saracens International Rugby 10s 2017’ is sponsored by Allied Pickfords, Amtech, Ben Line, HLAP, ISC Innovators, Jeeves, KL Sky Tour, New Bloom, Out of Africa, Tesco, Turcomp and Zerin Properties. It is supported by Malaysia Major Events and Ministry of Tourism.

Also present at the press conference were John Giblett, Treasurer of KL Saracens, Paul Lingan, Secretary of KL Saracens, Dave Solomon, Committee Member of KL Saracens, Coach for Under-10 and Sponsor (Out of Africa), and Danielle Sweetman, Coach for Under-6, Under-7 and Under-8.

The KL Saracens was formally established as Bintang Rugby Club (BRC) in 2007 with approximately 40 volunteer rugby enthusiasts. Known originally as Cobrats, BRC focused specifically on the development of youth rugby in the Klang Valley. The club has seen tremendous growth over the last few years, with over 500 currently registered active junior players.

The club participates in Malaysian and international tournaments all year-round. It also hosts its own tournaments, with the annual BRC International 10s initiated in 2008. This tournament, which will be called KLS Bintang International Rugby 10s from 2014 onwards, has proven to be hugely popular both at home and with overseas teams and is now one of, if not the biggest, youth tournaments in Southeast Asia with in excess of 2,300 young players taking part every year.

In 2011, the club created a seniors team to provide a pathway for its youth players to transition all the way to the top level of rugby in Malaysia. The seniors team played in the Super League in 2016 and will be playing in the Malaysian Rugby Division 1 tournament in 2017.

The KL Saracens is now a part of the Saracens Global Network, a growing family of leading clubs sharing the same ambition and values around the world. As a member of the Saracens Global Network, KL Saracens will receive visits from Saracens senior and community coaches, regular advice and guidance in all areas of the game and an opportunity for a talented young player to travel to London next year for the chance to win a place in the Academy of the current Premiership leaders.
