UAE shattered Malaysia dream
14 November 2017 – Young Hibiscus dream to return the Asia Rugby Championship Under 19 crushed by the ruthless United Arab Emirates. Both teams met in the Semi-final 2 of the Asia Rugby Under 19 Division 1 in Manila yesterday.
Malaysia Under 19 was hoping for an immediate return to the championship after they were relegated last year as they finished last. The United Arab Emirates better physics proved to be too much for Malaysia as the team from the far east shifted into another gear in the second half to secure the spot in the final.
Malaysia managed to remain in contention as they went toe to toe in the first half. 3 penalties and a try put the United Arab Emirates in the lead with a single point. Malaysia had 2 penalties and a conversion, all converted by Harith Iqbal. Malaysia captain, Muhammad A’aziem scored Malaysia only try of the match in the dying second of the first half. UAE lead Malaysia 14 – 13 in the first half.
It was all about the UAE in the second half as Malaysia unable to sustain the gameplay they had before. A penalty, as well as another UAE try, with a successful conversion, put them in commanding 24 – 13 lead. Malaysia unable to produce another come back as UAE added 10 more points.
The United Arab Emirates U19 beat Malaysia U19 34 – 13 after the final whistle. Malaysia will meet the host, Philippines in the 3rd/4th place match. The UAE will face South Korea to determine the tournament champion. Both matches are scheduled to take place at the Manila International School on 16th December 2017.
