Malaysia Women finished fourth
14 April 2017 – Malaysia Women only able to finish fourth in the South East Asia 7’s in Singapore this evening. The national 7 team who use this tournament as part of the preparation for the upcoming SEA Games did not have the best outing. Malaysia unable to secure third spot as they were beaten by the Philippines in the sudden death.
Malaysia Women did not have the best start when they lose to Thailand 26 – 5. They than secured semi final spot as they overcame spirited Laos 15 – 5 in the second match to setup semi final clash with the host, Singapore.
Malaysia dream to reach final and play in front of bumper crowd at Sportshub on Saturday crushed by the host as Malaysia were well beaten 29 – 5 in the semi.
The match between Malaysia and Philippines were drags into the sudden death after both team tied 12 – 12 in the normal time. Both team managed to score 2 tries and complete a conversion in the normal time. The Philippines got the better start in the extra time to win the third place.
Malaysia certainly has a lot to improve although they played their hearts out. “The teams need more match exposure. They are definitely in the right direction from all matches played during this tournament”, said Mr. Tan Thiam Jin, Malaysia Women team manager.
This is the third tournament that they joined after the Asia Rugby Women’s Seven Trophy in Laos where they finished third and Borneo Seven last month as the preparation for the upcoming SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur
The Malaysia 7’s Men meanwhile is flying in the South East Asia 7’s as they will play in the final against the host on Saturday. The match is schedule to take place at 5.00pm
