Johor Bharu edged Mersing for the tittle.
2 February 2017 – Mersing hope to improve on last year second place was once again stopped by Johor Bharu. The three days MSS Johor Rugby tournament ended with a bang where crowds able to witness a good quality rugby in the final match.
Johor Bharu under 18 started brightly in the opening encounter and managed to punish Mersing with early try. They also managed to complete the conversion to lead 7 – 0. Mersing double the effort and kept the opponent in their own half. Johor Bharu managed to keep their discipline and sticked to the match plan as the first half ended with 7 – 0.
Johor Bharu started the second half as quick as in the first one. Their quick and effective movement create another try early in the second half for them to make it 12 – 0. Mersing did not let their heads down as they keep on working as they plan. Mersing managed to score two tries in the last 15 minutes of the game. However, their inability to complete the conversion proof to be wasteful at the end of the final whistle as the match end with 12 – 10 score to give the championship title to Johor Bharu.
Pair Gudang finish third after they beat tournament host, Batu Pahat in the 3/4 place match. Redha who score one of the try in the final from Johor Bharu won the best forward while Mohd Faiz of Mersing won the best backline.
For the under 12 touch, Pasir Gudang played a wonderful final when they completely control the pace of the match and beat Kluang 31 – 10. Johor Bharu finish third with 15 – 12 win over Kota Tinggi.
Pair Gudang and Johor Bharu shared the overall tournament champion as both draw in the overall standing.
